Day 8: Be Kind

Recently, an undertone in media and the response in society has reinforced negativity, judgment, criticism, and stigmatism toward mothers. Take for example the TIME magazine breastfeeding article, “Are You Mom Enough?” Then, there was the tabloid ridicule of Jessica Simpson during her pregnancy. The positive note? Celebrity moms are standing up, speaking out, and striking a positive tone.

After tweeting this stunning image, Pink shared these insightful words:

“I felt that the article in TIME on attachment parenting was unfortunately a tad extreme. I support attachment parenting 100%… And have a very happy and healthy little girl to show for it. It’s time we support what’s healthy (breast feeding) instead of judge it.”

During an appearance on the Katie show, Jessica Simpson shared these graceful words:

“I really have to separate myself from the world’s expectations and really just look inside of myself and have a relationship with myself and being healthy with myself. That is really important because I want to be a phenomenal role model for my child. And if I get caught up in what the world’s saying and their expectations, I would not be here right now as strong as I am now with the support system that I have.”

Even in our own little corner of the world, sometimes negative thinking can seep into our internal {and external} dialogue. Most mothers question our “enoughness” on a daily basis. Next time you do, consider Jessica’s words:

“I think that the biggest lesson is to be kind to myself and to be gentle with myself and to keep reminding myself that it is a process and just cut myself some slack.”

Be kind to yourself in particular and people in general. Leave a Comment and tell us something kind that you have said or heard recently.
